07 Sep Keep the colds and coughs away with this Natural, Medicinal Tea!
The drink I’m talking about in the title is called Ume-sho-kuzu and it is a Japanese drink that is very popular within the macrobiotic community. It is really easy to prepare, it takes 5 minutes and I assure you that it can be VERY beneficial to have during the winter months that are coming up…It is prepared by mixing 4 simple ingredients: kudzu, umeboshi paste, soy sauce and kukicha or bancha tea. The names might sound a bit weird…I told you: it is Japanese drink so all the ingredients are form Japan. However, it is not difficult at all to find them in any natural food store. And even if you are not ready yet to make this tea because you don’t feel sick, I strongly recommend you having these ingredients in your kitchen cupboard… they are powerful natural medicines that can be used any time you feel sick or ill.
I’ve made it today because I’ve woken up today with a kind of a sore throat. It is not very painful but I still can feel that some viruses are having some fun there. It has been crazy hot last week here in Alicante where I live and I haven’t been able to sleep covered with the blanket during the last month…! It was obvious that this hot wouldn’t last long and just the other night it felt like Autumn was already hitting on the door. It was suddenly cold, I didn’t expect it at all and of course, I didn’t have any cozy, thick blanket around. :(
The cold penetrated in my body during the night so I haven’t woken up feeling my best. I’m not sick or ill, but I’m feeling I could be if I don’t take a step to completely stop it.
These moments are the perfect ones to start having some Ume-sho-kuzu drink, because it stops the beginning of any cold or flu. So if you feel you are coming up with something you should definitely try this now!

Ingredients (for 1 cup):
1 cup of bancha tea, kukicha tea or cup of watert
1 tsp de kuzu
1/2 tsp umeboshi paste
1/2 tsp soy sauce
1.In a sauce pan mix kuzu with cold tea and umeboshi paste*. Mix very well until the liquid comes white.
2.Heat up the liquid stirring constantly with a pair of chopsticks or with a wooden spoon, until the liquid thickens and turns transparent.
3.Add soy sauce and serve hot.
*You can also make this drink with hot bancha. To do that mix umeboshi paste with the tea in a saucepan and warm it up. In another glass mix kuzu with a little bit of cold water (1 tbsp) and add it to the hot liquid stirring constantly until it thickens and turns transparent.
In babes up to one year old, use 1/4 tsp of umeboshi paste
In children up to four years old, use 1/2 tsp umeboshi paste
In children between 4 an 10 years old, use 3/4 tsp of umeboshi paste
